About Chasteberry Extract Powder

Vitex (Vitex agnus-castus), also known as chaste tree or chasteberry, is a shrub found in the Mediterranean. It is used as a supplement to help alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, menopause, and polycystic ovary syndrome, and improve fertility.

Vitex may indirectly influence several hormones—such as progesterone and estrogen—by reducing the release of prolactin. While the supplement is generally considered safe, vitex shouldn't be taken with some medications, including oral contraceptives.

Chasteberry Extract Powder Benefits

Vitex has a history of use in treating a range of conditions that affect females. (Its nicknames "chaste tree" and "chasteberry" originated from the belief that it could suppress libido.)

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Vitex supplements may improve symptoms associated with PMS and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)—a severe form of PMS. Research suggests that by decreasing prolactin release, vitex helps balance levels of estrogen and progesterone. This may decrease the severity of PMS and PMDD symptoms like mood swings, breast pain, and headaches.

Menopause

Vitex is marketed to help manage hot flashes, night sweats, sleep problems, depression, and anxiety during menopause—but there's little conclusive research to back up these claims.

Infertility

There's promising evidence that vitex may boost fertility. A 2017 systematic review concluded vitex can contribute to the treatment of infertility in both men and women.

Another study found that taking a supplement blend containing vitex extract, maca, and folate significantly increased ovulation—but it's unknown whether it was vitex (or another component of the supplement) that was responsible for the positive result.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Research suggests vitex may help improve the following symptoms of PCOS : oligomenorrhea (irregular and inconsistent menstrual blood flow); amenorrhea (absence of menstrual period for three months or more); and hyperandrogenism (high levels of androgens).

Hyperprolactanemia

Hyperprolactinemia is a condition in which levels of the hormone prolactin are too high in the blood. Vitex may help prevent the release of prolactin, and therefore could be beneficial in treating cases of mild hyperprolactinemia and drug-induced hyperprolactinemia. However, there are only a small number of studies that have investigated vitex for this purpose.
